Does the Fine Structure Constant Vary? a Detailed Investigation into Systematic Effects

چکیده

We have previously presented 5.7 σ evidence for a smaller α at redshifts 0.2 < zabs < 3.7 from a sample of 128 Keck/HIRES quasar absorption systems: α/α = (−0.57 ± 0.10) × 10−5. A non-zero α/α manifests itself as a distinct pattern of shifts in the measured absorption line wavelengths. The statistical error is now small: we do detect small line shifts in the HIRES data. Whether these shifts are due to systematic errors or due to real variation in α is now the central question. Here we summarize the two potentially most important systematic effects: atmospheric dispersion and isotopic abundance evolution. Previously, these have been difficult to quantify/model but here we find that neither of them can explain our results. Furthermore, the HIRES spectra themselves contain no evidence for these effects. Independent measurements of α/α with a different telescope and spectrograph are now crucial if we are to rule out or confirm the present evidence for a variable α.

Possible evidence for a variable fine structure constant from QSO absorption lines: motivations, analysis and results

An experimental search for variation in the fundamental coupling constants is strongly motivated by modern high-energy physics theories. Comparison of quasar absorption line spectra with laboratory spectra provides a sensitive probe for variability of the fine structure constant, α, over cosmological time-scales. We have previously developed and applied a new method providing an order of magnit...

Therapeutic metallic ions in bone tissue engineering: A systematic review of the literature

An important field of bone tissue engineering (BTE) concerns the design and fabrication of smart scaffolds capable of inducing cellular interactions and differentiation of osteo-progenitor cells. One of these additives that has gained growing attention is metallic ions as therapeutic agents (MITAs). The specific biological advantage that these ions bring to scaffolds as well as other potential ...

Possible evidence for a variable fine structure constant from QSO absorption lines: systematic errors

Comparison of quasar absorption spectra with laboratory spectra allow us to probe possible variations in the fundamental constants over cosmological time-scales. In a companion paper we present an analysis of Keck/HIRES spectra and report possible evidence suggesting that the fine structure constant, α, may have been smaller in the past: ∆α/α = (−0.72 ± 0.18) × 10 over the redshift range 0.5 < ...

On the variation of the fine-structure constant in Friedmann Universes

The fine-structure constant α does not vary as Friedmann Universes evolve, a conclusion based on assessments of quantum mechanics and electrodynamics. α is the dimensionless number α ≡ e2/4πεo~c ≈ 1/137, where e is the charge of the electron, εo is vacuum permittivity, c is the speed of light, and ~ is Planck’s constant divided by 2π. This inquiry was motivated by Schrödinger’s (1939) predictio...
